Re: HELP! Starting Problem

Arno, are you sure the points have not moved on the base plate?
Did you replace the points before or after the car would not start?( see first question )
Did you connect a dwell meter to see if the points open when the engine is cranked?
Is the carbon tip present in the dist. cap and is it still spring loaded? Does it make contact with the metal plate on the rotor?
Are there no cracks in the dist. cap?
Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, but it is difficult to diagnose a fault without being there.I know how frustrating something like this can be.

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

No problem, all advice is welcome.
The cap makes contact with the rotor, the points work and I installed the points and condenser after it refused to start. The points are brand new, and the condenser. All 6 cylinders get spark and fuel and she sounds like she wants to take sometimes, but does not actually start. Sounds like the timing is way off. I have been told that the cam chain could have jumped a tooth or the distributor gear. I have parted with some meager savings to buy a new electronic dizzy from Fanie, but the post office does not know where it is, and Fanie has been a bit scarce. I have rudimentary tools so I have not been able to check if the cam chain is OK, due to an affirmative shopper who broke into my car and relieved me of my tools and some spares.
Would you know what size socket / tool the main pulley takes for removal and to turn the engine?

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

The paranoia can be set aside :D
I just managed to strangle information from a post office employee... My dizzy is on the way and I should have it soon, if they don't try to fit it to their delivery bike or lose it.
Thanks Fanie, I appreciate it. Hope you feel better soon.

Anybody with info on which sockets to use?

Lol, no harm intended Fanie, my work has turned me into a cynic.
Socket or tool size; I need to remove the crank pulley to replace the seal behind it. What do I need to remove it?

If I knew that I would be in Sommerset West this past weekend I would have brought down the parcel myself

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

No problem, I just collected it. The dizzy looks great! Now I just need to wire her up to the module and hopefully the Hearse will start. If not, I believe the cause then to be the cam chain that could have jumped a tooth. Therefore the request for the socket size of the front crank pulley, as I have to replace the seal there as well.

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

no socket required as it is a pressfit -IF a bolt has been installed it would be a 32mm - you do need a puller - this type Image be carefull not to loos the woodruff key, and do not try use this type Image on the outer ring as you will destroy the ballancer - if you have a slotted balancer - you can use this type by reversing the claws - ie having thethin claws pointing outwards

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

Aaargh!! Murphy's law, the worst that can happen will happen. Turns out that it was in fact the timing chain which had become too slack and jumped a few teeth. Where can I find a chain in CT and is there anyone here that has done this before that can help me? I also have to beg or borrow a puller to get the crank pulley off. I'm on the verge of giving up. HELP!! Looks like I won't be driving her anytime soon.

Arno relax it is not as bad as it seems - and it is DEAD easy to do worst part is removing all the bits and pieces to get to the timing cover - have just gone through that exercise on the Chrysler- and it has a lot more hanging of the front of the engine that the Valliant Will take you a Saturday to do

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

Thanx for the encouragement, Iwant to try and get her rolling before Wednesday. Just spoke to a friend who will come and give me a hand on Monday afternoon. He also told me that I could get the chain from Masterparts for about R200. Got to change the crank seal while I'm at it. Now I just pray for now rain, as she is standing outside.

Re: HELP! Starting Problem

IT'S ALIVE!! One timing chain and a cam sprocket with half it's nylon teeth missig later. She fired up first time at 21H30 last night.
Interesting thing; the guy I got the sprocket from has a '64-ish Val hidden in his garage with a mean intake, 4 barrel carb and headers running out in a dual system. He also has an oil cooler, tranny cooler and and electronic ignition. A humble toolshop worker with no knowledge of the internet's existence... Turns out he is a walking Encyclopedia when it comes to Mopar.
